SAYRE -- If this year's North Section Wrestling Tournament has a familiar look to it, it's not because fans will be seeing double at Sayre High School Saturday.
Slated to begin at 11 a.m. this year's tournament will host a pair of undefeated wrestlers for the 2001-2002 season that are among nine returning champions from last year's event.
Northeast Bradford's Dann Laudermilch brings the section's top record into Saturday's event with a perfect 28-0 mark. The North Section champion and PIAA runner-up last year at 152 pounds puts his record on the line this season at 160 pounds.
Derrick Morgan of Athens sports a 27-0 mark and is the top seed at 152 pounds. He won last year's 140-pound title.
The other returning champions are Trevor Bennett of Sayre, top seeded at 119 pounds; teammate Dustin Bloss, top seeded at 112 pounds and looking to defend his title from last season; Wyalusing's Zac Sheldon, the No. 1 seed at 125 pounds; Northeast Bradford's Kyle Howland, top seeded at 130 pounds; Ross Muench of Wyalusing, the No. 1 at 135 pounds and looking to defend last year's title; David Ausem, second seeded this year at 145 pounds; and Wyalusing's Josh Fisk, the top seed at 171 pounds as he looks to defend his title of last year.
Bennett won last year at 103, Sheldon at 119, Howland at 125, and Ausem was the 160-pound winner.
The Northeast Bradford Panthers are the defending team champions, but were dealt a big loss when 275-pounder Casey McPherson was forced to undergo emergency surgery for a blood clot in a calf muscle early Tuesday morning -- taking him out of any post-season competition. McPherson was a second-place finisher at last year's North Section Tournament.
This year's other top seeds are Matt Fisk of Wyalusing at 103 pounds, Trevor Twigg of Sayre at 140 pounds, Niles Putnam of Wyalusing at 145 pounds, Steve Sargent of Mansfield at 189 pounds, plus Mike Chatburn of Towanda at 275 pounds.
Saturday's action continues through the afternoon. The consolation finals are set for 6 p.m. with the championship finals slated for 7:30 p.m.
The top three finishers will advance to next weekend's District IV Tournament at Williamsport High School.
