Once the post season starts a wrestler MUST WEIGH IN AT THE MINIMUM WEIGHT THAT HE WISHES TO WRESTLE FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON. Whether a team participates in the District team tournament is NOT the deciding factor. Once the post season starts in the District, the new rule is in effect for EVERYONE.
A wrestler may choose to move up but if he weighs in at a higher weight for ANYTHING (dual meet, team tournament, individual tournament or any district qualifying meet, team or individual) a new minimum participation weight is established and he may NOT compete at a weight below the new minimum participation weight.
An example: a young man weighs in at 130 lbs. on February 10 for the District team tournament quarter-final round. That night, he may wrestle at 130 lbs. or 1351bs. and the minimum weight that he may wrestle for the sectional tournament is 130 lbs. The same young man weighs in at 134 for his team's District team tournament match on Saturday, February 13th. Since he did NOT make weight for 130 lbs. on Saturday, he may wrestle either 135 lbs. or 140 lbs. during the Saturday team tournament match BUT, HE HAS NOW ESTABLISHED A NEW MINIMUM PARTICIPATION WEIGHT AND MAY NOT WRESTLE BELOW 135 LBS. IN THE SECTIONAL (INDIVIDUAL) TOURNAMENT.
A second example: a AAA team decides not to participate in the District team tournament which will start for AAA on Saturday, February 13. The team has a dual meet scheduled on Tuesday, February 16. Each wrestler on the team will establish their minimum participation weight when they weigh-in for the dual meet on Tuesday, February 16. They may NOT participate in the District individual tournament on Saturday, February 27 at a weight lower than they weighed in on Tuesday, February 16.
A third example: a class AA wrestler weighs in at 145 lbs. at the individual(sectional) tournament on Saturday, February 13. For this AA wrestler, the minimum participation weight of 145 lbs. Must be used throughout the remainder of the team and individual tournament seasons.
It is essential that actual stripped weights be recorded and maintained for every competition that occurs after the start of the post regular season. This includes the recording of actual weights for the start of sectional, district, and regional meets.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ACTUAL STRIPPED WEIGHTS BE RECORDED AND MAINTAINED FOR EVERY EVENT THAT OCCURS AFTER THE START OF THE FIRST POST REGULAR SEASON EVENT. THIS INCLUDES THE RECORDING OF ACTUAL WEIGHTS FOR THE START OF SECTIONAL, DISTRICTS OR TEAM COMPETITIONS.
The consistent and uniform application of the rule as interpreted above is important to prevent wrestlers from being caught in a situation where they may be ruled ineligible. If any school has any questions, the athletic director should contact the PIAA Office.
